KEEP Asking & You Shall Receive; KEEP Seeking & You Shall Find

Many people are familiar with the "ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find" scripture but did you know that the scripture has an even deeper meaning? Persistence. I have included passages from Luke 11 (story also found in Matthew 7:7-8) and Jeremiah 29.

Luke 11:5-10 (NLT) – Then, teaching them more about prayer, [Jesus] used this story: “Suppose you went to a friend’s house at midnight, wanting to borrow three loaves of bread. You say to him, ‘A friend of mine has just arrived for a visit, and I have nothing for him to eat.’ And suppose he calls out from his bedroom, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is locked for the night, and my family and I are all in bed. I can’t help you.’ But I tell you this—though he won’t do it for friendship’s sake, if you keep knocking long enough, he will get up and give you whatever you need because of your shameless persistence. “And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.”

Jeremiah 29:11-14 (NIV) – For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back from captivity."

God has a reason for everything and His timing is always perfect. He is near. Is there a prayer or need that you keep asking for and seem to get no answer? Or is your need so big that you do not even bother asking for His help? I hope this encourages you to ask, seek, not give up, and be persistent! God is interested in you and every detail of your life. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6, NASB). And remember, God may just be answering "not yet." In waiting, we develop strength in who we are in Christ and also learn to trust not in ourselves but in God.

I Am Featured in MADD's April Volunteer Newsletter as the Volunteer Spotlight!

I have been volunteering with MADD since 2009 and this month, they decided to feature me in their Monthly Volunteer Newsletter!

Volunteer Spotlight Reads:

Tonya was in a near fatal car crash with three other teenagers in 2005, two weeks after her high school graduation. They had been drinking into the late hours one night and then decided to take a drive. Her friend, who was driving, ran a stop sign across Highway 5 and at that exact moment, an 18-wheeler smashed into her door at 40 mph leaving her paralyzed. This June will mark the seventh anniversary of her car crash and the beginning of a grateful outlook on life.

She is twenty-four years old and lives in McKinney, Texas with her amazing parents and boyfriend of ten years. After seven years of attending Collin County Community College part-time, she finally obtained an Associate of Arts degree with emphasis in Liberal Arts last May. Now a student at the University of North Texas, her heart is set on pursuing a bachelor's and master's degree in Social Work. She always dreamed of obtaining a college degree and doing something great with her life. It will take a long time but she cannot think of a better way to live her life than by learning how she can serve and empower others.

After almost losing her life, suffering the difficult consequences of drinking and driving, and spending several years trying to make sense of it all, she received the revelation that she survived for a reason and was to share her experience with others. She is a committed volunteer for MADD because she stands for its mission, has personally witnessed how dangerous alcohol can be, and feels a spiritual calling to make a difference in as many lives as she possibly can. She started volunteering for MADD in 2009 and has served as an advocate at community fairs and a speaker to Collin County Adult and Teen Victim Impact Panels, Blue Ridge High School, Hebron High School, Ector High School and Middle School, Sam Houston High School, Collin County Community College, and Frisco Boys and Girls Club.

The rewards of volunteering with MADD are invaluable and have positively shaped her into the strong and determined leader she is today. Her volunteer experience has given her a voice and provided an avenue to make a lasting difference that can be seen, heard, and felt. She has not only learned the devastating effects of drunk driving and underage drinking but has made remarkable connections and friendships with other activists in the fight. Their voices are united in such a way that they are much more than just volunteers. They are a family that loves, provides, educates, and perseveres.

Thank you, Tonya for all your work and efforts to support our mission: to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime, and prevent underage drinking. We appreciate you.

Thanks MADD for all you do!

Dreams

As you know, I want to be healed. I want to walk, run, jump, move, and feel again. I'm ready. I tried stem cell treatment and it helped and I feel it is still helping but as I sit here today, I am still paralyzed.

I have grown in indescribable ways since my car crash - ways that I would have never grown had I not been in a car crash. One way in particular that I've grown is in my faith. I have learned how much God loves me and how He is always there with me. Although I cannot always see where a path is taking me or understand why things are the way they are, I have learned that everything that happens is for the best and I need to trust God.

I believe with all that I have that one day God will heal me. One day . . . I feel it in my spirit. I feel it in my prayers. I feel it in my tears. This June will be 7 years since my car crash. I am not sure if I am just hoping and wishing or if God is speaking to me through my affliction but I feel something telling me that I will be healed on the seventh anniversary of my car crash: June 16, 2012.

I have had numerous dreams in which I have been healed and even others where God specifically healed me. I wanted to share a couple of my dreams with you.

On March 25, I had two dreams. In the first dream, a girl I went to high school with entered my presence and gave me an odd look as I stood in front of her. She then said, "I heard you were exponentially healed!" It was as if by me standing in front of her, what she heard was true! Immediately afterwards, I dreamed that the devil was trying to take over my mind and body. He had many different strategies. I tried and tried to rebuke him and command him to leave me alone and almost was defeated but in the end, I won. Then I woke up.

Two nights ago, I dreamed that my Boyfriend was trying to help me stand. My knees finally locked and I stood griping tightly to my bed. He had to leave my side for whatever reason in which I was left alone. I began to pray and ask Jesus to heal me. As I finished praying, I tried to move my feet and hands and I was healed! I remember saying, "Thank you Jesus! Thank you Jesus! Thank you Jesus!" Then, Billy walked into the room and saw me and what God had done!

Thank you Jesus for healing me. I believe!

Please keep me in your prayers! Thanks so much!

Foods That Boost Your Mood

1. Omelet (with yolk) - B VITAMINS and PROTEIN.

Other examples: Lean beef, wheat germ, fish, poultry

Why they help: A diet rich in B vitamins can help lessen the severity of depression symptoms. B vitamins, especially B-6 and B-12, can help improve neural function -- the way the neurotransmitters of the brain send signals, which helps govern mood. There's also a growing link between vitamin B deficiency and depression. A 2010 study of 3,000 older adults followed over 12 years found that those with lower intake of these vitamins had a higher risk of depression, according to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The protein in eggs (as with lean meats) helps you feel satisfied longer, stabilizing blood sugar. And eggs can be consumed in a variety of ways, from scrambled to used as a French toast batter to boiled and chopped up as a salad topper -- so long as you go easy on the accompanying animal products that are high in saturated fats, like bacon or butter.

2. Nuts and Seeds - MAGNESIUM

Examples: Pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, cashews, almonds, peanuts. (Green leafy vegetables and whole grains are also high in magnesium.)

Why they help: Magnesium, a mineral found naturally in nuts and seeds, influences production of serotonin, a "feel-good" brain chemical. Magnesium also affects overall energy production.

Bonus: Nuts are also a good source of protein and healthy fats. And as a whole food, they make a healthy alternative to processed snacks, provided you choose unsalted and unsweetened varieties. Salt and sugared coatings don't add any health benefits and may make you overeat because they set up cravings in the brain for more and more salt or sugar.

3. Cold Water Fish - OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS

Examples: Wild salmon, herring, sardines, anchovies, tuna (not more than once per week), rainbow trout, mackerel.

Why they help: There's a reason fish is known as "brain food." Fatty fish such as wild salmon contain the omega-3 fatty acid DHA, which has been shown to increase the membrane quality and nerve function of gray matter in the brain. Twenty percent of the gray matter in the brain is composed of DHA. Some studies have found that DHA consumption especially increases gray matter in the amygdala, the hippocampus, and the cingulate, three areas of the brain associated with mood. People with severe depression have less gray matter in these areas. Fish is also a great source of lean protein, which stabilizes blood sugar. Eating small amounts of protein with meals can help keep your mood on a more even keel.

4. Ancient Grain - COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATES

Examples: Quinoa, millet, teff, amaranth, spelt, barley

Why they help: Complex carbohydrates take longer to digest, which means they don't cause spikes in blood sugar that can create roller-coaster moods. Complex carbs also increase levels of serotonin in the brain.
While any whole grain is good, so-called "ancient grains" are even better, according to Reardon, because they're less likely to be man-modified and processed. Packaged, processed, and refined foods made with wheat flour and sugar, in contrast, tend to be digested quickly, causing cause blood sugar to spike. When this happens, the body responds with an oversecretion of insulin, which winds up moving too much sugar into cells -- and blood sugars plummet. The end result: poorer concentration, fatigue, mood swings, intense cravings, and overeating.

Ancient grains are increasingly available at mainstream grocery stores and big-box stores such as Costco and Sam's Club. Look where rice products are shelved. Many ancient grains can be cooked like pasta or rice and served in their place as side dishes, in casseroles, or as a base for fish or chicken.

5. Grean Tea - AMINO ACID L-THEANINE

Examples: Hot green tea, brewed iced green tea -- including flavored varieties like jasmine green tea or berry green tea

Why it helps: L-theanine is an amino acid found mainly in tea leaves; it's been shown by EEG tests to stimulate alpha brain waves. This can improve focus while also having a calming effect on the body.

"Despite the caffeine, the L-theanine in green tea seems to be profoundly relaxing, with effects that last up to eight hours," Reardon says. L-theanine is easily absorbed and can cross the blood-brain barrier, adding to its effectiveness.

God is at Work

God’s presence has never felt as real to me as it does in this moment. I can for the first time see Him working through my prayers in my life and in the lives of others. I have prayed for months, maybe even years for God to open my eyes to His vision and let me feel Him, see Him, and hear Him with all of my being. As I pray for the broken relationships in my family to be healed, for my family members and caregivers to know the Lord, for everyone I know to be delivered from addictions and be blessed with friends who are strong in their faith, and for God to work in us and through us, He has shown up and began moving in mighty ways. The veil that has blinded me all of my life and allowed me to only see the bad in any given situation has been lifted and I now am able to see what God can do, will do, and is doing through the unexpected twists and turns of life.

Through my Aunt and Uncle’s house fire, God is healing the broken relationships within our family, opening their eyes to His love and grace, and letting them know that He does exist, has a purpose for their lives, and works good through all things.

Through my massage therapist, an opportunity was presented for one of my caregivers to attend a spiritual retreat which focuses on renewing the mind and life of an individual. “SOS at Zac’s Ridge is a powerful program designed to help you make dramatic shifts in yourself and empower you to live the life you desire all in just 2 weekend classes” (http://www.sosinc.org). Because of the retreat, my caregiver is a completely changed person and is transforming into the woman God created her to be.

Through a friend, I have learned that another friend’s drug dealer moved away this week to another state, completely removing this drug connection from my friend's life! There is always the possibility of another drug connection becoming available but I am believing for more!

Through a car accident with an 18-wheeler this Monday, God is changing the destination of the life of my boyfriend’s best friend. I have prayed for this person to receive an awakening from God and to be saved. I see how much God can work through this situation for the better - that this person will be saved, healed, that his eyes will be opened to God's vision, that God will use Billy through this situation and show his friend God's love, grace, and spirit; and that Billy and his friend will be transformed into the men God created them to be.

God is so good! Thank you God!

Please keep these people in your prayers as well as my Nanny (has brain cancer) and my Boyfriend (frustrated with his job and uncertain what to do next).

Thank you for your continual support! XO

Prayer for US Tornado Victims

We all are aware of the seeming increase of tornadoes and storms in the U.S. and around the world. This week, about 6 dozen tornadoes have devastated many U.S. communities and regions taking 30 lives and leaving 75 injured (Sommers, 2012) and even more houses, businesses, and vehicles destroyed. Please keep these Americans in your thoughts and prayers. Some have lost everything.

Father, we lift up those devastated by these tornadoes and we ask for your divine intervention in their lives and in this situation. Holy Spirit, we thank you for comforting them. May they feel your Holy presence and run to you. Please shower them with healing and restoration physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Please use this situation for good and lead those affected and aware to Christ and unite us as one. I pray God for those who are experiencing loss from these tornadoes to look to you for understanding and be blessed with even more than what they had initially. Please wrap your merciful and gracious arms around them. Thank you God. We trust in you and know you can do all things. In Jesus' name, Amen.

My Nanny

At the beginning of January, we received a saddening phone call that my Nanny was in the ER, had a stroke, and may have damaged the part of her brain that controls balance and memory. My parents, sister, boyfriend, and I left the next day and drove to Alabama to see her. When I finally saw her, she looked like her old self but had lost weight and appeared very weak. I hugged and kissed her and told her that I loved her.

We soon heard that her doctors discovered cancer in her esophagus (near her stomach) and brain. I immediately felt sick and weak myself. She is my only grandparent left. My Dad and his brother were raised by her alone and are very close to her. Death and age are so difficult to bear. Especially when it is a loved one. She is now using oxygen and has to lay down every three hours from being so tired and to relieve her constant headaches. They called in hospice three weeks ago.

Please keep her and our family in your prayers. She is a great and strong woman who has been an inspiration to me throughout my life. Father, I pray for your will to be done in this situation. I lift up my Nanny and I pray God that she will be strengthened where she is weak, held when she cannot hold up anymore, comforted, and continued to be used for your purposes till her last breath. Father, please bring health to her body and nourishment to her bones. God, please use this situation for good. I pray God that we will lean to you for understanding. Please heal the broken relationships and hardened angry hearts in this family. I pray that your Holy presence be felt. Please allow her to eat and keep her food down and surround her with love. May she know you are with her. I pray for the salvation of those in this family that do not know you Jesus. May your love feel ever more real to them. I pray all of this in your Holy and Mighty name Jesus, Amen. Thank you Jesus.

5 Surprising Reasons to Drink Water

Of all the food and beverage choices you face every day, what's calorie-free, virtually cost-free, and, oh yes, essential to keeping you alive? Plain ol' water. But those aren't the only reasons to drink it.

"Water drives basic body performance," says Beth Reardon, director of nutrition for Duke Integrative Medicine, part of the Duke University Health System. "All of the systems in the body require water for proper functioning, and so do 90 percent of all chemical reactions in the body."

Here are the top five reasons to quench your thirst with water.

1. It will help you de-stress.

Why: Being sure to sip water throughout a stressful day can soothe stress-induced symptoms as diverse as headaches, tense muscles, fuzzy thinking, a pounding heart, and low energy. That's because stress taxes all your basic body systems -- and when you're dehydrated, the effects are magnified.

Given that more than half your body weight is water, Reardon says, "just a 2-percent reduction in hydration has a dramatic impact on energy levels and cognitive function." And dehydration further raises levels of cortisol -- the "stress hormone."

Water won't wash your stressors away. But it can provide you with more energy, ease tension, slow breathing, and reduce the strain on your heart.

Water-drinking tip: "Eight by eight -- eight 8-ounce glasses a day -- is a good general rule of thumb," Reardon says, "but it's a myth that's the magic amount for everyone, because there are so many variables." The "right" amount for you depends on factors including your age, your activity level, your health level, medications you're taking, and the weather. So how do you know if you're drinking enough? Follow your thirst, and know that you're on the right track if you have straw-colored urine, Reardon says.

2. You'll lose weight.

Why: In a 2010 study of adults aged 55 to 75, drinking two 8-ounce glasses of water before meals was associated with almost four pounds more weight loss in 12 weeks than in a control group who ate a similar diet but didn't have the pre-meal H20. Participants drank an average of 1.5 cups of water a day before the study.

In part, the Virginia Tech researchers say, water is filling, so you feel fuller and eat less. An earlier study found those who drink water before meals consume an average of 75 fewer calories per meal. (Make that twice a day over a year, and that could add up to 14 pounds!) The Virginia Tech scientists also believe the water drinkers began swapping this zero-calorie beverage for sodas and other caloric beverages.

What's more, when you're well hydrated, your body is working closer to maximum efficiency -- enhancing aspects of weight loss, like digestion and muscle function, when you exercise.

Water-drinking tip: For variety's sake, try flavoring your water. Drop some fruit into a pitcher and let it sit a few minutes -- lemons, oranges, watermelon, and berries all work well. Or let an herbal or flavored green tea bag steep in unheated water to accent the taste.

3. You'll be less apt to get sick.

Why: Hydration keeps your mucus membranes in top working order -- they're gatekeepers to the natural defense system that helps keep out germs such as cold and flu viruses. When these tissues dry out, germs can more easily penetrate to the nasopharynx, where the nasal passages and mouth meet. And if you catch a bug anyway, the severity of your illness is more likely to be lower if you've been drinking a lot of water.

Water is an especially smart health move when you're traveling. Most commercial planes fly at elevations between 30,000 and 35,000 feet, where humidity is 10 percent or lower. That means you're breathing dry air in a tight space filled with germs from dozens of people. Water keeps your mucus membranes moist -- and your defenses high -- even in that challenging situation.

Water-drinking tip: Bring an empty water bottle with you to the airport that you can fill for free once you're past security. Or buy the biggest bottle you can right before you board, and aim to finish it by flight's end. Don't hesitate to ask the flight attendant for refills while you're in the air.

4. You'll be more comfortable.

Why: It doesn't matter if the water you sip is hot or ice-cold. The act of drinking it will keep you warmer on a cold day -- and cool you off on a hot one.

"Your internal thermostat works better when you're well hydrated," Duke nutritionist Beth Reardon says. "Water helps regulate body temperature."

The body's temperature-regulating system, governed by the hypothalamus in the brain, is constantly picking up information that allows it to make adjustments to maintain a fairly steady core temperature. Hot sun? You'll sweat to cool down. Hatless in snow? The hypothalamus will know you're losing heat through your head and work to produce extra energy, such as shivering.

But these mechanisms work less well if you're dehydrated – and dehydration is a common risk for people of all ages, in winter as well as summer. In cold weather, for example, you lose water vapor through your breath. And many people tend to drink less water in cold weather because they don't think they need it as much as on hot, sunny days.

Water-drinking tip: Start by swapping out one soda, cup of coffee, or high-calorie hot chocolate a day with an equal amount of water. Carry a bottle of water with you all day long as a visual reminder to pause and sip. Sip more when you're physically active, whether in water, snow, or any weather condition.

5. It will help regulate your blood pressure.

Why: In 2010, the American Red Cross discovered that when blood donors were given 16 ounces of water to drink before giving blood, there was a 20 percent drop in fainting after the procedure. That was an important finding for them, given that many of those who faint then chalk blood donation up as a bad experience and never return to give again.

It's not entirely clear what mechanism is at work. But the Red Cross was inspired to conduct a study after researchers at Vanderbilt University noticed that drinking water activated the parasympathetic nervous system -- related to the "fight or flight" system that makes you more alert, elevates blood pressure momentarily, and boosts energy. Fainting after donating blood is often connected to a drop in blood pressure, and they theorized that the water would counter that effect.

(Not drinking enough water on a regular basis can also raise blood pressure. That's because dehydration causes blood vessels to constrict as the body strives to conserve water that it loses through perspiration, urination, and breathing. When blood vessels constrict, however, the heart pumps harder, bringing blood pressure up.)

Water-drinking tip: Start your day with a glass of water for a simple energy boost that remedies any dehydration that may have occurred overnight. Keep a filled glass or bottle on your nightstand or an empty one next to the bathroom sink.
